Garryclogh
(Dr. Willie Nolan) The townsland of Garryclogh has to its credit many interesting features including being the site of a Penal-times period church and graveyard. However no trace of these buildings can be discerned by the casual visitor today. There are still some ringforts in existence in the townsland. The smallest of these ringforts measures approximately 150 feet in diameter. The south and east sides are perpendicular and linear while the west sides are more rounded. It is built on a slight hill. There is no trace of a fosse around the perimeter The bank is worn away to approx. 18 inches. There are a lot of trees on the South and North East corners where the bank is much higher and broader. The next ringfort is larger and the diameter measures approximately 165 feet. The central platform measures 90ft. The outer bank built for protection is 30ft. wide and as high as 4ft. in places. Both ringforts are in reasonably good condition. |
